What is SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth)?

SIBO is a condition in which the number of bacteria in the small intestine has increased. Intestinal bacteria are usually not present in the small intestine in the same quantities as in the large intestine. When the amount of bacteria in the small intestine exceeds the normal amount, it is bacterial overgrowth.

The SIBO test is a breath analysis in which breath gas is collected 10 times over three hours (every 20 minutes).

Who is the test intended for?

SIBO can cause various symptoms, including bloating, excessive gas, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and changes in bowel function. Studies have shown that up to 72% of patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) also have SIBO.

The analysis suits people with other symptoms and those with inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease, celiac disease, ulcerative colitis), food sensitivities, joint pain, nutrient deficiencies, inflammatory conditions, eczema, or autoimmune diseases.

The analysis can be useful even if the person has not been diagnosed with a disease related to the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract.

    What does the test say?

The analysis is done by consuming a sugar solution before taking breath samples. Based on the samples, the concentrations of gases, hydrogen, and methane, can be measured. When the sugar solution reaches the bacteria in the small intestine, they use the sugar as a food source and produce hydrogen and/or methane as a byproduct. These gases are absorbed from the intestine into the bloodstream, traveling to the lungs and exhaling. The test report tells the measured concentrations of hydrogen and methane gases.

The SIBO "pathway": Bacterial overgrowth -> Hydrogen gas -> Archanobacteria overgrowth -> Methane gas

What does the result mean to you?

The SIBO breath test can show whether bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine contributes to gastrointestinal symptoms. Based on the test result, individualized treatment can be determined and the underlying cause of the problems can be treated, not just alleviating the symptoms.

The treatment program includes individual diet and supplement recommendations and an estimate of the optimal treatment duration. The duration depends on the person's situation and treatment response. The program can be aimed at reducing the overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine and supporting the beneficial bacterial flora in the intestine.

Sometimes, a follow-up test is performed after 2-3 months.

The study is provided by Nordic Laboratories.

Regarding the interpretation of the test, our recommendation is to have a one-hour remote consultation and coaching with Doctor Olli Sovijärvi.
